Big Spring is a small town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,154 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1881 by brothers John and James Big Spring. The name comes from a spring located near the town's center. Big Spring post office was established in 1883 and continued to serve until it closed in 1993. In 1909, Big Spring became the first city in Medina County when it was incorporated as a result of an act of Congress known as the consolidation bill. At its peak, Big Spring had a population of 20,000 people and operated two newspapers—the Texan and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram—and several banks and other businesses. In 1915, however, when oil discoveries began to produce large amounts of revenue for Medina County governments all over Texas, BigSpring quickly declined within years; its population fell below 5200 by 1925 . By 1940 only 612 residents remained; by 1960 only 350 residents remained ; by 2000 only 100 residents remained . However, since then there has been an increased emphasis on tourism due to nearby natural resources (such as springs) which have made big spring one of central Texas' most popular tourist destinations. In addition to being home to one of Tarrant County's largest golf courses (the Baylor Golf Course), major league baseball's Rangers play their home games here intermittently throughout the year (usually during April or May) while football games are played at UNT McKinney Stadium on campus respectively between TCU Horned Frogs and Baylor Bears teams..
