Boerne, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Hudspeth County. With an estimated population of 67,838 as of 2010, it is the 8th largest municipality in Texas and the second most populous city in Hudspeth County after Austin. The city was established on November 3rd, 1881 by a group of settlers from German-speaking South Dakota who formed a community called "Bent Ridge" east of San Antonio. It became part of what is now Hudspeth County on July 1st, 1907. Boerne has been named one of America's fastest-growing cities for twenty years consecutively and has seen its share in economic growth spurt since becoming a major metropolitan center in North Texans with access to Interstate 10 and other major highways The history behind Boerne begins with Count Ferdinand von Müller who arrived in 1847 as part of the Texan gold rush. He founded what is now known as Müllerstadt am Rhein about 12 miles (19 km) southwest of present day Boerne along the San Antonio River. This settlement was short-lived because rich discoveries were made farther north near Austin later that year and development around Müllerstadt stalled. In 1881, a group led by James Fenton decided to establish a new town called Bent Ridge east of San Antonio due to dissatisfaction with existing communities around town including downtown San Antonio which they felt was too small and unimportant compared to other towns situated closer to the river or mountainside veins containing silver and gold mines. The original Bent Ridge site included land that forms today's eastern border between Hudspeth County and Travis County withinAustin City Limits Park which opened in 1997 adjacent to Interstate 10 just east of IH10 exit #534 gated off when Interstates 10 & 35 were built within Austin limits back then(today IH10 exit #534 does not exist). As early as 1881 there were plans forBoerne even before its establishment date as some maps from that time depict Bent Ridge located near present day Slaughter Road/ US 90W just southwest (along Slaughter Road at mile marker 281), across Slaughter Creek from present day Farmers Branch/ FM 2636 west (now US 290E)and northeast from today's Hidalgo Heights / Monterey Hills neighborhood located minutes south onMonterey Hills Rd., southeast from today's Airport Blvd./US 290E corner (now 6th Street NE)just southwest from Brownwood Village
