However, it wasn’t until 1892 that a grocery store called The Coffee House opened up on Commerce Street. It was here that people started buying coffee from local farmers and selling it at their homes or businesses. In 1904, John Witherspoon opened the first convenience store in Bonham with purchase of ground beans from Edward Brandt. This store was followed by many others throughout the years before finally being closed down in 1984 due to lack of interest from customers. Bonham, Texas is a small town in Red River County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It lies along the Red River and is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Bonham has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years and was founded by Captain James West in 1836 as Fort Willkie. The early settlers were farmers, ranchers, and soldiers who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. In 1902, Bonham's first post office opened, serving residents of nearby Arlington. By 1910, the town had a general store and several homes. The most important event to occur in Bonham during this time was when William Jethro Tatum organized what would become Baylor University there in 1912. Tatum helped to create Baylor's first student body and built remain one of its most prominent landmarks - now known as Hargrave Hall - on campus today. The 1920s were not kind to Bonham; it lost many businesses due to prohibition and World War I (1914-1918). However, things started to change after World War II when Bonham became home to plans for an air force Base Number One which led to new construction throughout town including numerous factories that employed many local workers until the mid-1980s when they closed down because of budget cuts within NASA's Johnson Space Center satellite program. After more than 20 years without any major development projects taking place in downtown Bonham until recently with only a few boutique shops setting up shop inside Grit & Grin restaurant across from Walmart just outside of town limits; things began to change last week when local Developers Chad Sayers & Shane de la Torre purchased 3 acres next door from Walmart currently being used as their family farm land for housing purposes complete with significant mitigation features such as open space for agricultural use with accessable water supplies adjacent thereto ideal for cattle/horses grazing etc... essentially rebranding downtown into what it has always been but never really existed before ____________________________________________________ It seems that even though times have changed quite a bit since then Downtown business owners Chad Sayers & Shane de la Torre decided that they wanted some input on how they would like their redevelopment plan moving forward... so much so that they held an open house last week featuring various aspects of their proposal which included considerable expansion eastward towards I-30 including protected wetlands buffers between properties adjoining I-30W/+ 400 parking spaces (!!) ___________________________________
