Bonham is a census-designated place in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,619 at the 2010 Census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded by James Bonham in 1879 as a trading post on the Trinity River between Austin and Corpus Christi. In 1902, the town became an incorporated settlement under the name of Universal City. In 1907, it changed its name to Bonham after General James H. Bonham who served as commander of First Cavalry Brigade during World War I and later became a U.S Congressman from Texas's 3rd congressional district. Bonham has been home to UT Southwestern Medical Center since 1989, which opened its doors on campus in downtown Bonham in 1995 with a $100 million donation from entrepreneur Henry Ford II and his wife Betty Ford Healy Ford. The hospital now employs over 5,000 people and provides care for patients from all across Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo counties as well as parts of Del Rio and San Antonio. As a result, many Mexicans who were living in Texas left to take up residence in other parts of America. Some of these Mexicans found their way to what is now Bonham and began farming there. They also started building homes and businesses. By 1881, there were more than 100 businesses operating in Bonham at this time. The population of Bonham grew rapidly during this time, reaching 1,500 by 1907.
