The plant's remains can be seen today at the site of what is now an all-purpose garage on State Highway 82 east of town. Bonham, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 593 at the 2010 census. Bonham has had its start as a cattle rancher's colony on the banks of the Brazos River. In 1876, John A. Bonham and his family founded the town and named it after himself. The original business district of Bonham was centered around downtown and along State Highway 9. Today, much of what once constituted downtown Bonham is now part of the University of Texas at Austin campus. The early settlers in Bonham were primarily farmers who raised livestock and fished for fish on the Brazos River. By 1907, however, there were also several shops, restaurants and a post office in town. The first store was built by Wm Crouse on Pecan Street in 1912-13; it became known as "Crouse's." In 1915, JB Griggs opened a grocery store on Elm Street in downtown BonHAM which became one of the most successful businesses in town until he closed it in 1984 due to financial difficulties.. During World War II, local residents served in various military units including tanks (the 1st Battalion Texan Infantry), fighter planes (the 8th Fighter Squadron) and artillery pieces (3rd Brigade Artillery). Some residents even took up arms against Japan during World War II while otherssupervised production at nearby Beaumont munitions plant that produced incendiary bombs used by Japanese forces during their battle with America's atomic bombing campaign against Hiroshima and Nagasaki
Bonham was founded in 1836 by Jedediah Bonham and his brother, Sam. The town grew quickly due to its strategic location near the then-new Texas Trail. By 1840, the population had grown to around 350 people. In 1851, Bonham became a county seat and remained that way until 1907. It also served as the capital of Hudspeth County from 1857 to 1861. During Reconstruction in the South, Bonham was a center for cotton land speculation and political corruption. In 1916, the United States purchased Hudspeth County from Spain for $10 million dollars. The new owners turned it into a cattle country and added more than 120 miles (180 kilometers) of railroad to support their herds of Hereford and Angus cows. The post office was renamed Bonham in honor of Ulysses S. Grant, who had played an important role in helping purchase Hudspeth County from Spain.
