Bonham is a city in Chambers County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. The Bonham post office has been in operation since 1881. The name of the city was taken from Samuel Bonham, an early settler in this area. Bonham was founded by James Hogg and others on March 16, 1881 as a farming community named after David Bonham, the brother-in-law of landowner John Denton. The town rapidly grew into a small town with a bustling commerce and manufacturing sector during the late 19th century. In 1924, when Chambers County formed its first government under the State of Texas Act of 1912, Bonham became part of the new county seat and remained so until it amalgamated with neighboring Eldorado to form Eldorado-Chambers County in 1959. During World War II much activity took place in and aroundbonham due to its strategic location on US Highway 281 between Dallas and Houston as well as its proximity to multiple airfields used by the military including Love Field and Brownwood Airfield. After the war many businesses closed down but newer ones sprang up such as Sam's Club which still exists today as one of Americas largest online retailers
