By 1860, however, Borger had become an agricultural center with few industry options available to its citizens. The city's growth slowed during the late 1800s as cotton prices rose and railroads arrived to service the new southern Mexico Railroad. However, during World War II BorGER served as one of the final strongholds against Japanese aggression in Southwest Texas. After the war ended in 1945,borger experienced rapid growth as a result of postwar job creation opportunities in defense industries such as steel production and phosphate fertilizer production. Growth continues into today with significant investments from both private landowners and state government throughout the municipality's history
