TheGunsmiths Arms and Ammunition store was located on Little Rock Avenue at that time and was one of the few businesses in town that sold firearms. Borger, Texas is a small town located in Comanche County, Texas. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Borger is named after Danish immigrant Ole Borger. In 1881, he and his family settled in what is now Comanche County. Ole Borger built the first store in what is now Borger on the present day corner of Main and Elm Streets. He also founded the first school in what is now Borger. Ole Borger died in 1909, but his legacy lives on through his son Ole Eriksen and grandson Ole Larsen who both reside in Borger today. Their families have operated the store and school since then. The two older men are responsible for keeping everything running as a family business while their younger brothers take care of things such as marketing and internet operations. The village ofborGER has been around since 1907 when a group of six Scandinavian farmers decided to settle together on an area that would become comanche county because they could not get land from their government for agricultural reasons (Larson). They named their new community "BorGER" after Ole Eriksen's father who had helped them purchase the land from the Mexican government during the Mexican-American War (Larson). Over time many other settlers arrived including Germans, Irish Catholics and Americans from various states along with some refugees from Europe (Fletcher). This settlement grew until it had a population of about fifty people by 1914 (Fletcher). By 1920 there were over one hundred people living inborGER with ninety percent Norwegian ancestry (Larson). From here many businesses started up including farming, churches, doctors etc., which allowedborGER to start developing into a thriving community (Fletcher). It should be noted that this picture does not include all black residents as most white residents left during this time period or were driven out by racial violence (. e. lynchings) .main Street was still called "the Negro Avenue" even after all these years
