Borger, Texas is a small town in southern Webb County, Texas. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded by Danish settlers in 1876 as Borger Station on the Brazos River. The first post office opened in 1880, and the name was changed to Borger in 1903. In 1911, Borger became an independent municipality and has since been governed by a mayor and a two-member council. In 1919, Borger began trading with China through mail service. The trade stopped after World War II because of US wartime restrictions on trade with Communist countries. Borger also began manufacturing radios and other electronics equipment during this time period. In 1957, the first high school opened in Borger; it was later renamed North Central High School. In 1984, the town annexed part of neighboring Arlington Heights; this annexation led to the first use of township form government in Webb County history. In 1987, a new library was built at North Central High School; it is now known as EastCentral Library & Community Center. In 2001, voters approved plans for a school expansion that would add additional classrooms and make significant renovations to existing buildings; the expansion ultimately led to the construction of three new schools - Park View Elementary School (2002), Southside Middle School (2005) and West Side Intermediate/High School (2006). After years of discussion and planning, BorGERS (the city's brand for "Webb County's real estate")opened its doors on July 1st 2009! This exciting development allowed us to finally offer our residents access to quality pre-owned housing units from all over Webb County!
