The Air Force Base in Brownsville, Texas has a rich history dating back to World War II. The base was first established in 1942 as an airfield and later became the home of the 1st Bombardment Wing. It played a significant role in the Korean War and during the Vietnam War, it was responsible for conducting airstrikes against enemy targets. Today, the Air Force Base is one of the most important military facilities in Texas and is home to more than 120,000 active duty members and their families. In 1969, General William Westmoreland made an announcement that would change the course of history at Brownsville AFB. He announced that he was disbanding all of America’s bomber wings and moving all of those planes to RAF Fairford England. The move would create a new class of fighter pilot called “Airliners” who would be able to fly faster than any other type of plane. This event marked a turning point for aviation and it would shortly lead to American Aerospace Corporation becoming one of the largest aerospace companies in the world. In 1947, the USAF created the Aeronautical Systems Branch (ASB) to continue research on new technologies for aircraft and missiles. The ASB was also responsible for developing and testing air-launched cruise missiles (ALCs). In 1957, the ASB developed the A-3E Skytrain missile which could be launched from a fighter jet. This innovation allowed the USAF to conduct aerial bombings of targets in Korea without having to use bombers. The USAF then began development of what is now known as Joint Air-to-Ground Missile Technology Office (JAGMTO), which was established in 1960 to develop new ground based artillery systems such as the MIM-8 Command and Control System, Hellfire Missiles, and GBU-12/14 B2 Spirit Specialty Bombs. JAGMTO continues development of these systems today.
