Brownwood is located in Brazoria County, Texas, within the Houston metropolitan area. The population was 24,909 at the 2010 census. Brownwood is a small town of about 5,000 residents on U.S. Highway 59 and I-610. The community's name comes from brown trees that are found in its immediate vicinity. The first Europeans to visit Brownwood were Frenchmen who traveled through the area in 1763 on their way to Monterey Bay. They were looking for a route to get to Mexico City when they came across what they thought was an Indian village but which later became known as Brownwood because of the trees near it that were light brown and above other trees at a distance of 100 yards or so. In 1839, John Neely Bryan moved his family from Arkansas to Brownsville and began trading goods with Indians along the San Antonio River at what is now I-610 and U.S Highway 59. He founded the Neely Bryan cattle ranch which would later become one of America's largest beef ranches. In 1881, he built homes around what are now downtown Brownwood and across from First Baptist Church (later called First United Methodist). It was here that he developed into one of Texas' most powerful landowners and political figures during its early years following statehood in 1896 In 1907, Driscoll Bros., grocery stores owners located just east of downtown on Commerce Street (now part of Tomball Boulevard), opened up shop in what is today Memorial Park south of UH-59/I-610 . That same year saw construction begin on Baylor University's new campus . One building on campus – Main Building – still stands today ; this building housed the university's administration until 1966 when it moved into its present location on Elmendorf Road . By 1920, there had been erected a number of frame buildings around town including churches (First Presbyterian remains standing), schools (Baylor School District No 6 has since moved out onto US 59), general store / post office (post office changed hands multiple times over time; current location: chrysler dealership), Masonic Lodge #1 (Masonic Lodge No 2 now meets inside First United Methodist ), historic district museum housing many old photos/paintings related to local businesses/people/events etc., plus some modern day additions such as library branch restaurant etc.– all while business continued to grow! In 1925-1927 plans were made for a movie theater but these never materialized due largely to opposition by property owner Chilton Hogg who felt it would impact his market share! In 1929Eddie Manns opened up Lonestar Restaurant ("the red steak house") just east off I-610 near Market Street right next door to Masonic Lodge #2; Manns & Company prospered until 1971 when they closed down after thirty years in business! A few years ago Lonestar was bought by another restaurateur who reopened it under different management before finally closing it again several months ago! As mentioned earlier Baylor University was established circa 1909 as Central Texas Agricultural College though classes did not start until 1915 thanks largely to donated land by Chilton Hogg aka "The Father" behind much economic development taking place throughout central TX during those earliest days including Brownsville proper started expanding rapidly becoming an urban center with something like 3 km² being developed singlehandedly by Mr Hogg alone prior too even Houston annexed neighboring Galveston County back then !! All this activity took place while also large numbers jobs were created both locally (& nationally) thru various industrial endeavors throughout those early days making Brownsville arguably one if not THE leading city/town within easy reach & orbit !! Todaybrownwood remains highly active vibrant community characterologically unaffected bordered only byHouston metroplex sprawled out vast countryside all ruralindaarketing $$
