The Brownwood National Guard was organized on December 1, 1923. The unit was activated on October 4, 1926. The first commander of the Brownwood National Guard was Colonel W.J. Hagan and the unit's first battalion Commander was Captain J.W. Brownell. On October 3rd, 1930, the armory opened its doors to the public and business owners in town were able to tour it and get their hands on some of the latest military equipment that had yet to be available to them at home or elsewhere in Texas before it became too expensive or unavailable for local use again until well into World War II (1939-1945). From 1933 until 1949 there were a total of 27 soldiers commanding units in Brownsville TX; 10 from Fort Bliss; 8 from San Antonio Air Force Base; 6 from Lubbock AFB; 2 from Wichita Falls AFB On July 3rd 1936 Major General James Fenton relieved Brigadier General John Sutherlin as Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment with Brigadier General Clement Epler taking his position effective July 1st 1936 which made colonel Hagan acting Commanding Officer pending an investigation into allegations against him of improper activities while he commanded that battalion-the investigations revealed no such wrongdoing however due to this affair Hagan resigned his commission effective September 15th 1936effective October 5th 1936 due to health issues only two weeks later when he learned of another allegation made against him by three enlisted men also within his regiment who alleged that they had been sexually assaulted by him while he lay down next to them during a march exercise at Fort Sam Houston because they felt neglected and insecure under his command The situation reached such a head where upon further inquiry it was determined that both these accusations could not be substantiated however alledgedly criminal behavior does exist within the military so much so that section 573a of Title 10 United States Code states: "any member thereof who has committed any misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for more than one year may be removed from service" This means any soldier accused or convicted of a crime outside of normal duties can be discharged without cause if found guilty regardless if it is proven beyond reasonable doubt

Brownwood is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Brownwood was founded in 1872 by Captain John W. Brown and his wife Lillie Sibley Brown on a ranch that they purchased from the Hensley family. The community grew rapidly following the construction of the Butterfield Railroad through Tarrant County in 1876 and its extension to Brownsville in 1880. A post office called Brownsville was established in 1881, but it was discontinued in 1896. The first school opened in 1886; it became known as Western School District #4 after becoming a municipally chartered school district with independent status in 1907. In 1957, Brownsville merged into Brownsville Jr./Southeast High School District #1 to form one large high school district with an enrollment of more than 10,000 students. With this merger, Brownwood lost some of its economic importance and its role as an agricultural center for Tarrant County became more important as a bedroom community for Fort Worth and Arlington increasing their populations west of I-10 during the 1960s and 1970s
Brownwood started as a small town in the early 1800s. In 1876, it became the county seat of Brown County. The first courthouse was built in 1877 and the town continued to grow until annexation by Austin in 1915. When Austin merged with TxDOT, Brownwood became an annexe and within TxDOT it continues to operate as an independent municipality.
