Brownwood is located on State Highway 183 east of Austin and south of Lubbock. The first people to live in what would be Brownwood were volunteers who erected a cabin in 1886 by local farmers for use as a schoolhouse. The original village plat was filed in 1890 and named after Captain Samuel Hogg (1789-1863), an early settler and landowner in Johnson County. In 1901, Captain Hogg donated land to build thepresent School District #2 which included all of present-day Brownwood Village except for the eastern edge where it became part of Round Rock. On November 14, 1903, the first municipal election was held in Brownwood with Mayor Wanda Floyd being elected unopposed to a three year term starting January 1, 1904; she served until her death on May 12, 1912during which time First Ward Councilman Wm. Bigham assumed mayoralty under thenew constitution which allowed city elections only once every two years instead of every four years as had been prior thereto In 1925 Brownwood organized its own fire department based upon an initiative from City Manager Caryl Bowen with $5 from each household contributed towards purchasing sixteen cars for service The successor to Municipal #1 now administers most aspects Of Community life including trash pickup/municipal services etc., such as streetlighting/paving etc., thru its new Department created In 1990 thru amalgamation Of 2 predecessor Departments: Public Works & Watercourse Maintenance In 1962 voters approved annexation into Round Rock creating yet another Municipality within our community thereby providing even more services unavailable or unaffordable To those living inside Municipal boundaries before that point Today's Municipal government oversees all aspects Served By The previous 2 predecessor Divisions: Public Works & Watercourse Maintenance & Streets And Sidewalks

However, it continued to grow slowly until 1880 when it reached 1,000 people. After that point, its growth slowed significantly as a result of waves of immigration from Mexico and other parts of the United States. In 1910, Brownsville became an independent city and Brownwood lost its status as a small town. Today, it is a working-class community with a population of around 1,000 people.
