Bryan, Texas is a small town in northern Dallas County that was founded in 1872. It is located on the banks of the Trinity River, about 20 miles (32 km) north of downtown Dallas. The population was 2,083 at the 2010 census. Bryan's history begins with the arrival of European settlers in 1827. The first permanent settler was James Wolkowitz, who arrived in an ox wagon and plundered what is now Wise County for food. Wolkowitz's daughter, Mary Ann Gregg Kieffer, later married Captain Levi Coffin of the Texas Rangers and together they founded what would become Bryan. In 1872, John Pemberton organized a land grant from President Ulysses S. Grant to twelve men named heirs to General Sam Houston's estate near present-day Arlington Heights in eastern Dallas County. This grant spanned 6 square miles (15 km2). The name Bryan came from Houstons' observation that "Bryan Creek" flowed through this area and that it looked like "a bay on which ships could berth." The first store opened in 1875 at 4 Main Street; by 1886 there were six stores and two hotels along Railroad Avenue serving residents of nearby Fort Worth and Decatur counties as well as Bryan. By 1899 there were sixteen businesses operating out of Bryan proper with a population exceeding 1,000 residents. A post office was established in 1903 at 5 Main Street and remained operational until 1935 when it merged into the larger Dallaspost Office building on Elm Street east of downtownDallas During World War I, American forces constructed several airfields within or adjacent to present-day Bryan including Fort Worth Army Air Field #1 (later renamed Dowling Field), which became home to both USAAF pilots training for combat missions over Europe during World War II and also served as a primary operations base for Tactical Air Command during Operation Neptune's Spear against Japan; Lowry Army Airfield #2 (later renamed Bracken Municipal Airport), which serviced bombers engaged in strategic bombing raids against enemy targets inside Nazi Germany;and Camp Bowie Army Airfield #3 (later renamed Seymour Johnson Army Airfield) which provided support activities such as bomber escort flights over North Africa during Operation Torch . Aircraft production increased markedly following World War II due to new Cold War military requirements such as airborne reconnaissance developed during the war A Popular Science article published in 1951 noted that "the city has recently undergone one important growthspur[ing] outof its old center...It [bryon] has experienced an influx ot immigrants who have brought their skills with them: many people are now employedin manufacturing." In 1954 Confederate veteran Wallace Frazier opened Lone Star BBQ & Catering at 819 Naha Road followed by Clyde’s Pizza & Pasta next door before becoming Brazos Farms grocery store owner/operator chain operating ninety stores throughout western Texas between 1970-2005 In 1965 local businessman Donny Ray Smith purchased the newspapers from his father-in-lawSamuel Hoke Glasscock III ceding ownership interests totaling 3 papers plus three weeklies -The Daily Review Of Commerce City(now The University Press Of Central Texas),The Globe(now UTEP Review),AndThe Statesman(now Baylor University Press)to local businessman Jimmy Ray Smith Smith transformed these papers into a daily paper chain called First Media Company predecessor to today’s ABC Newspapers Incorporated
Bryan was founded in 1875 by John Bryan and James DeWitt. The town grew rapidly after the completion of the Texas Central Railway in 1879, and soon became a center of cotton culture. In 1907, Bryan was named the capital of Texas by then-Governor Alfred Ladd.
