The Navy has sent naval ships and sailors to various places throughout the world, but it is in Bryan that the Naval Ship Museum is located today. The museum offers a variety of USS Constitution-era gifts, as well as items from other eras including World War II and Vietnam era gifts. The Naval Ship Museum first opened its doors on October 1, 1922 within what was then the Municipal Building on North First Street. In 1942, when World War II started, Bryan became one of seventy-eight cities across America that ratified 34th Amendment to the US Constitution which granted citizenship to all citizens of Puerto Rico. Consequently, Squadron 515 (the "Tropicbirds") sailed into town for supplies and reinforcements on December 7th 1941 while USS Palau (AO-1) patrolled off shore in support. In 1959, Mrs. Jensa Hesselberg donated an WWII Victory Medal with Citation to be displayed at the Naval Ship Museum pursuant to her gift from her father Mr. Gustavus Hesselberg who had served aboard USS New Mexico (LPD2) during World War II and received his medal posthumously. This was followed by a donation ofUSS Preble (AGI-27) which arrived at the Museum on August 25th 1978 after being scrapped by Lockheed Martin Corporation in Monterey California two years earlier due to low sales rates for their new Constellation class submarines.. / From left: Lt.(jg.) The town was founded on December 12, 1867 by John Fenton and James Buchanan Keyes as a mission station called Palestine. It was named for General Edmund Kirby Smith's victory over Mexican forces at the Battle of Palestine in 1846. The town became a farming community and has been primarily agricultural since its founding. The first store in Bryan opened in 1870. One of the most important events to occur in Bryan occurred on January 7, 1907 when Judge Edwin Ladd decision declared unconstitutional the state constitution granting voting rights to aliens without legal status. This event helped to make Bryan an important political center in Angelina County during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 1916, Mayor Joe Waugh became one of only two people ever elected mayor of Angelina County without winning a majority vote from his councilors; he served for three years before being impeached for bribery and malfeasance by then-Governor Ross Barnett (now Houston).
