Bryan, Texas is a city of over 150,000 people and it has a long history of policing. The first police officer in Bryan was hired in 1873. In 1916, the City Council passed an ordinance mandating that all officers be wearing badges with their name and rank on them. This ordinance was repealed in 1922. Bryan, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Bexar County. The population was 1,505 at the 2010 census. The city is located in the central region of the state on the Gulf of Mexico and lies within eastern Brazoria County on Interstate 55 just south of Galveston Island. The area that would become Bryan was settled by Texans in 1845, when John Clements founded an agricultural settlement near present-day Galveston island as part of his effort to establish Fort Bend County. Early settlements were destroyed by Indian raids but Clements' experiment proved successful and he became one of the first white men to settle in what would become Bryan county. In 1851, some settlers moved from Austin to take up land east of Galveston island for a new town called "Bryan". The name came from John Clements's wife's maiden name, which was also her married name before she changed it to Bryan after their marriage. In 1872, two years after Fort Bend County was created, Bryan incorporated as a town under the leadership of Mayor James Hoggard with backing from cattle ranchers in neighboring UST&E Railroad Company lands west of downtown (thus becoming known as "Hoggardville"). A year later Hoggard died suddenly while driving across railroad tracks into town; his widow took over running things until her death three years later. In 1886 debate arose over whether to make Bryan an independent municipality or merge with UST&E Railroad Company lands east of downtown; eventually both towns merged into one entity under Mayor Jerald Ladd Jr.. First elected mayor in 1924 were Wm Fenton (1924-26), Harry Goodnight (1928-30), Loren Easley (1932-34), Clyde Talbot (1936-38), Sallie Mae Whitehead (40) and Ralph Lowenthal (42). From 1940 through 1944 incumbent mayor Lowenthal did not run for re-election due to World War II service; during this time Culberson County sheriff Donny Hathaway served as acting mayor followed by Jack Collins who held that position until Hathaway left office for good in 1948 due to health problems unrelated to war service. During this time civic organizations such as Houston Business Men's Association/Houston Civic League were formed which continue operations today including having their meetings at City Hall along with several other civic organizations housed inside City Hall annexes such as Parks & Recreation Department - currently headed by Mayor Sylvester Turner since January 2018 During Hurricane Ike there was much damage done throughout downtown including significant loss or destruction to many businesses including local grocery store looted and burned down early morning hours following landfall Punchy’s BBQ being completely demolished leaving only foundation remaining behind gutted interior walls facedown on Houston Street across from Toyota Center
