Hill wrote that “Burleson” was a name given to a small post on the Brazos River by some Texans who were living thereabouts...It may be fairly assumed that this settlement grew up around what we now call Fort Worth because it lay within easy firingdistance of both points and would have been convenient for traders and travelers." In 1859, William Blythe reported that “a little village or hamlet about four miles from [Fort Worth] called Burklestown” had been established by Texans west of present-day Arlington Heights. On November 1, 1860, Burleson residents served notice to Mayor John Sitton of their intention to form a city government with its own police department and fire department. This ordinance setting up government was published in the Dallas Daily Globe on November 17th; it has never been rescinded or modified since then! In 1865 (during Reconstruction), Confederate soldiers burned down part of downtown Burleson while retreating from Texarkana following the Battle at Mansfield Plantation near present-day Arlington Heights. On January 1st 1870 burleysville took its current name after General David Ewell Burlingame resigned his commission as colonel commanding all forces at Galveston Bayou Bridge during an attempt to break through Union lines towards Austin before they could be reinforced by Major General Zachary Taylor's army under command of Brigadier General Forrest...Ewell's resignation opened up opportunities for others within his regiment to fill his position and so began one of history's most colorful military careers... thereafter general Ewell resided permanently at Galveston until his death there on October 21st 1893...burleyville became home to many famous Texans including Judge Royce Stephenson (served as mayor from 1907-1910) and Doctor J.B.. Combs (served as state senator from 1951-1957).
