In 1836, General Sam Houston set up a military post in what is now Burleson. This Post served as a base for operations for the Texas Army during the Mexican-American War. In 1851, Captain John A. Strother founded the First Marine Depot in what is now Burleson. This depot serviced Marines stationed along the Texas coast. In 1865, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt established an America's Clipper shipyard at Port Lavaca in Port Lavaca County. This dockyard produced vessels used by the U.S government such as CSS Alabama and USS Constitution. The town of Burleson began to develop around this port and industry. The first store opened in 1879, and within a few years, there were three churches in town with services being offered both inside and outside of their churches! In 1911,Burleson became a city!
Burleson is a small city in the U.S. state of Texas, located in the Midwestern region of the country. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name Burleson comes from Spanish settlers named Francisco and José who established a rancho (a parcel of land) near present-day Burleson in 1835. A post office called Burdine was established in 1839, and by 1840, it had become known as Burleson after General Rufus Pemberton's campaign against Mexican forces which ended with his victory at Buena Vista Creek on November 15 that year. The first store in town opened its doors on December 6, 1840, according to one source. In 1846 burlesoning became an official term for cattlemen branding their own animals with a hot iron to indicate their origin or quality or sale prices; this practice continued until 1903 when brandishing became prohibited by law statewide due to public safety concerns related to animal theft and rustling during roundup operations). In 1860, cotton crops were grown here; however they were not very successful because of lack of rainfall and pests that attacked the plants such as white fly (Aedes albopictus) and corn borer (Eudyptes chrysolophus). The first oil well was drilled west of town in 1901 by J W Ludlow & Sons under contract from ChevronTexaco Limited; however, production ceased soon afterward due to gas development adjacent to the Well site. In 1915 crude oil was discovered drilling east off Shell Oil Company Road just south of town; however no wells were drilled until 1933 when Dickenson Drilling Co., Inc., leased an interest in Shell's leasehold rights for $1 million dollars producing natural gas bearing rocks at 3°24'N 96°48'W leading up "Gulfland" field located about 20 miles east-northeast of downtown Burleson where supplies are now harvested from onshore pads operated by Noble Energy Corporation since 2006 under a joint venture between BP Exploration Ltd., Transocean Drilling Corp.; Noble NGLs LLC.; BG Group plc.; EOG Resources Inc.;ued Enron Energy Partners LP Partnership Agreement dated October 9th 2009 entered into between BG Group plc., Enron Energy Partners LLP Partnership Agreement dated November 8th 2009 entered into between BG Group plc., US Offshore Petroleum Exploration Services LLC.) Burleson is a city in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Thetx Burleson Chamber of Commerce defines "burleson" as including all of Cameron and Ellis counties. The first settlers in this territory were Arapaho Indians who arrived in 1824. They named their new land "Nacoochee". In 1826, General Sam Houston granted 640 acres to John Burt, a Confederate general during the American Civil War. This parcel included what is now Burleson. The town site was surveyed by JF White in 1838 and erected on land donated by James Gentry in that year. On October 5, 1840, Burleson became a county seat of Cameron County when it was created from parts of Ellis and Travis counties. In 1861-1862, many Texans fought for the Confederacy under General Braxton Bragg during the Mexican-American War and later joined Union forces after the war ended. After Texas seceded from the Union on November 12, 1865, Burleson remained an independent county until it merged into Cameron County on January 1st 1876 effective with that date's official incorporation document When Texas rejoined the United States following World War II as an official state on December 3rd 1945, Burleson became its new capital city with a population over 50% above prewar levels (as against just 2% for nearby Austin). Today's downtown skyline rivals any major U S City while still boasting some small scale pioneer businesses that survive today thanks to their location within walking distance of most residents & ample access to both public transportation options
