The Canyon community began as a cattle ranch in 1881. A post office was established there in 1892. The name Canyon was chosen to honor Major General John C. Fremont and his men who fought against Mexico during the Mexican–American War on February 14, 1846 near present-day Canyon City (now part of Irving). In 1921, the first school opened in Canyon whenSchool District No. 5 merged with School District No. 8 to form Medina County Schools; later that year the name change back to Canyon when all five school districts were merged into one district again (the current name). In 1932, new schools were built and named for local citizens: First Baptist Church (1932), Hmong Elementary School (1936), Main Street Baptist Church (1938), and Parkland Middle School (1950). As of the 2010 census, 2% of the population identifying themselves as Hispanic or Latino lived in canyon; this has increased over time as more Latinos have moved into canyon from other parts of Medina County or from surrounding communities within Medina County

Canyon is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. The townsite was first settled in 1881 by a group of families from Georgetown and Springdale. The town was named for Canyon Creek, which flows through the area. The first black person to live in Canyon was W.E.B. Du Bois in 1923. He had been born and raised in Springdale and moved to Canyon after being discharged from the U.S Army during World War I.Du Bois began teaching at white schools in Dallas and then taught at Southern Methodist University before becoming president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He died in 1964, four years before his own death at age 90 years old
Canyon was founded by the Lipan Apache in 1827. The first post office at Canyon was established in 1828. In 1865, the original town of Canyon was destroyed by a tornado.
