The Coast Guard gift history in Canyon, Texas goes back to 1935. In that year, the Coast Guard erected a station at the mouth of Cano Bay on the Gulf of Mexico. In 1945, the Coast Guard took over responsibility for the harbor and beach facilities located at Cano Bay. In 1990, a new Command Post Building was completed on Governors Island which houses Headquarters for both CBP ( Customs and Border Protection) and UGNL (United States Naval Forces Command). In 2002, it became possible for members of military services stationed in New York Harbor to visit Governors Island during their tour duty without prior notice ahead of time via boat or helicopter. In 2006, Governor’s Island received its own airfield allowing it to serve as an international visitor destination center for cruise ships docking at JFK Airport in Queens

Canyon is located in Hudspeth County, Texas and was first settled by Native Americans in the 1820s. The area that now makes up Canyon was part of the Rancho San Antonio grant to José Altamirano on November 17, 1827. In 1859, the United States acquired much of present-day Texas from Mexico through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and it became part of the United States as a result. As a result of this acquisition, Canyon residents voted to secede from Hudspeth County on December 3, 1861. The secession ordinance was passed at a meeting attended by about seventy people and approved by referendum on December 11th. On February 6, 1862, the Confederate Army under General Robert E. Lee attacked Union forces at Fort Hood near Canyon and within minutes over 150 men were dead or captured including two local merchants named Ahern and Donovon. After three days of fighting Union forces regained control over Fort Hood and Canyon became an important stop for supplies moving between Confederate lines in what is known asthe Mexican War.
Ahern & Donovon had been trading with Mexican traders since they arrived in Austin in 1836 but their business partner Juan Bautista Chávez died suddenly while traveling eastward on November 12th1858 leaving them without an income source for their family
. In 1860 canyon pulled together some locals to form a militia to protect themselves against possible Indian attacks which only lasted until 1863 when state troops moved into the area.
By 1870 canyon had grown so large that it formed its own county government with Donovon as its first president. From then until 1912 there were no major changes taking place in Canyon except for annexation by Aransas County.

Canyon was originally called Rincon de la Sala because it consisted mainly of sandstone that would often avalanche due to strong winds.
