Rick is the owner and operator of the Lewis Coffee House at 318 Neches Ave. in Carrollton today. -1994 - The Joe's Coffee Company opens up shop on Second Street in Carrollton and begins serving fresh ground coffee to local businesses and individuals. In 1998, Joe's Coffee becomes one of the first Starbucks stores open in Texas when it opens its doors at 106 W Loop Rd in Midtown Houston. In 2007, Joe's Coffee company moves to their current location on Saginaw St., just east of I-10 exit 163B in Carrollton.
Carrollton is a small town located in southeastern Travis County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. Carrollton is home to local high school and college students as well as many people who commute to nearby Austin or Houston. It also has a wide variety of businesses, including several grocery stores and two large banks. The town's ZIP code is 76501. The first Europeans to visit what is now Carrollton were traders from Spanish Texas looking for new markets for their goods. They named the area "Mendoza" after one of their friends there, Jose Mendoza. In 1836 Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Texans west of the Rio Grande not to take any more Indian land and so this land lay fallow until 1845 when it was leased by A&P Co., an American meatpacking company that had been founded in Austin by Andrew Johnson in 1865 (later renamed JBS Companies). In 1886 A&P sold its interest in Mendoza land to John Sibley & Sons who organized the San Antonio and El Paso Railroad under Section 8 of the Land Act of 1881 which allowed railways to be built through unenclosed ranchland with no right-of-way given to anyone but stagecoaches carrying settlers into central Texas (the only time this happened). In 1907 Albert Matson bought some 640 acres from Sibley for $1 per acre. Matson started building a cotton gin on his property which became known as "Matson's Cotton Mill". By 1912 he had erected about fifty buildings on his mill site including four shops/factories, three barns/breakers, a post office/ telegraph office and other associated structures plus about seventy-five slaves working at various tasks inside and outside the mill buildings (a total size larger than anything ever built in America at that time). In 1916 Matson's son James Ransom Hinton took over operation of the mill while his mother continued to operate the shop/factories; she died in 1922 just before James' inauguration as president of Gulf Oil Corporation which later became ExxonMobil Incorporated (today part of Chevron Corp.). In 1928 Hinton's widow married Edwin Culp Richardson who ran Gulf Oil Corporation until its takeover by Mobil Incorporated in 1986.) In 1933 Ransom Hinton Jr., grandson James Ransom Hinton III and others formed Republic Steel Works Ltd., a limited liability company with iron ore mining rights adjacent to Coal Creek Reservoir on State Road 620 east of present day Carrollton where they developed an extent coal mine producing 0% loss grades since 1923 without any surface water usage.(See Republic Steel Works Ltd.). Ransom Hinton Jr.'s death occurred on October 25th 1951 leaving surviving heirs none other than James Ransom Hinton III himself who succeeded him as President & CEO - making him one half owner Plains Alloys Division direcdy responsible for Plains Alloys production across North America! In 1916, the U.S. government purchased part of the Rancho Corral de la Frontera from the Carrolts, which made Carrollton an official military post. The population of Carrollton peaked at around 25,000 in 1930 and declined following World War II until it dipped below 10,000 in 2000. However, since then it has slowly started to grow again thanks to new development and a boom in job opportunities in the oil industry. Today, Carrollton is one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas with a population of over 20,000 residents and plans to add another 5,000 residents over the next five years.
Carrollton was founded by John Carroll in 1826. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who served as the 25th Governor of Texas from 1846 to 1849.
