The United States Air Force Deployed a Gift toCleburne, Texas in commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Cleburne. The gift was an airmen’s hospital bed. This event is significant because it was the first time that a U.S. military installation had been set up in Cleburne and it also provided medical care for American servicemen stationed in Europe during World War II. In 1941, the Germans invaded Poland, resulting in the outbreak of World War II. The United States was already involved in the war as a member of the Allied Forces and soon began sending troops to fight against Nazi Germany. In October 1941, General George C Marshall ordered all U.S military installations be set up across Europe “to furnish needed facilities for our troops who were being sent overseas” (Fletcher). One such installation was RAF Scampton near Liverpool, England which became known as Station Camp G-2 (later renamed RAF Merville) after General Marshall directed its construction (). The camp initially housed 1,500 American troops and their families while it awaited completion of RAF Merville proper which would house 6,000 American troops and their families by 1945 (). American servicemen from European locations received treatment at RAF Merville through Operation Market Garden which took place from May 2 – 14, 1944 (). During this time period 3 million Americans served overseas with over 100 thousand dying in action (). Cleburne is a city in Wood County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,633 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town of Cleburne was founded on October 15, 1876 by Captain George Shelby and his wife Eliza A. Crosby as a post office near the center of Round Rock. Its name honored General James Biddle Cleburne (1789-1841), who had been general in the Mexican War and had served as U.S. Minister to Mexico from 1829 to 1830 and again from 1835 to 1840. The first post office was closed on February 16, 1880 due to lack of mail truck drivers; it reopened on March 6th under the name of Centreville Post Office after receiving new machinery from Canadian Postmaster-General John Langdon Macdonald's department which arrived in early April 1880 As early as 1907, local citizens were petitioning for annexation into Round Rock City Limits; this petition resulted in an ordinance approving annexation on November 7, 1907 with a vote of 5-1%. On December 1st 1909 an agreement was reached betweenCleburne Mayor Wm H Crain and Austin City Councilman John Ladd granting 1/3 acre (.27 km²) north of Speedway Avenue eastward along Highway 95 to be annexed into Austin with no right of way being given back to Cleburne residents or any other property owner outside of Round Rock boundaries In 1916 when Round ROCK CITY LIMITS WAS REALIGNED CLEBURNE WAS INCLUDED WITH ROUND ROCK AND THE ZONING ADMINISTRATION INCREASED THE AREA FROM .27 KM2 TO .81 KM2
