It is located on FM 1792 about 25 miles (40 km) east of Dallas and 10 miles (16 km) west of Fort Worth. The town was founded by Texans who moved from Missouri to what is now Cleburne in 1851. They named it after General Sam Houston's brother-in-law, James Bowie, who had been killed during the Mexican War. The first post office was established in 1853 and the first store was opened in 1865. In 1875, a railroad station was built and served as the town's commercial center until it burned down in 1922. Cleburne became an important agricultural center during World War II due to its location near Bexar Bayou and its production of cottonseed oil and other crops. After the war, Cleburne experienced rapid growth as a result of new industrial development such as chemical plants and aluminum smelters that began to come online around the turn of the century. However, recent economic downturns have caused many businesses to close or relocate their operations to other larger cities throughout Texas.
