Cleburne, Texas is a small town in southeastern Texas, located about 20 miles south of downtown Austin. The population was 3,362 as of the 2010 census. The name "Cleburne" comes from the Cherokee word "kleburna," meaning "to stretch out." The first European to visit Cleburne was Alonso de Herrera in 1536. A mission station was established here in 1821 by Father Fernando de Montoya y Costilla. In 1845, General Sam Houston built his headquarters and military arsenal on what is now Cleburne Boulevard. By 1870, most of the original settlement had been destroyed by a combination of drought and Native American violence. In 1881, Cleburne became part of the newly formed Republic of Texas following its independence from Mexico. On November 2nd of that year, Governor James Kenedy issued a proclamation designating Cleburne as the seat for the new state government. As part of this effort to consolidate political power within the new state, Kenedy appointed George Hogg as governor and namesake for what would come to be known as Hogg County. As part of their efforts to modernize their economy and attract investment into their community, local businessmen erected several hotels and other businesses during the early years of Cleburne's history including Wacoal & Company (later renamed Hobby Lobby), Jarrells Clothing Store (now known as Jarrell's Retail). By 1924 there were more than 40 businesses clustered around Mount Pleasant Street in downtown Cleburne with a population over 1,000 people! In 1935 Mayor Bertram Clements closed down mountain resort Casino Monte Carlo due to lack patronage from City Hall; it reopened in 1936 under Mayor John Eppley with much different management but with similar goals - making Monte Carlo an attractive tourist destination while avoiding competition from nearby Austin'. In 1940-1941 two oil spills took place at Galveston Bayou near present day San Antonio which caused extensive damage downstream; both times authorities responded quickly but without having any permanent response facility set up until well after dark because night fishing was then legal in most parts of Texas! On December 6th 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor resulting in America entering World War II; on December 8th President Franklin D Roosevelt addressed Japanese nationals living or visiting Texans through broadcasts via short wave radio networks starting at 5 Pm CST that day: "I do not want you fooled--America is at war!" The United States Marines moved into positions all over East Texas beginning on December 9th; prior to this they had been limited largely to coastal strongholds such as Corpus Christi and Galveston Island battlefields where they had inflicted heavy losses upon our enemy since 1942! Aftermath: More than 100 died along with thousands injured when USS Constitution sunk off Cape Hatteras January 1945 while carrying troops home after being stranded ashore during Battle Of Leyte Gulf
