The Cleburne Police Department has been providing law enforcement services to the community since 1872. The department is responsible for policing the small town of Cleburne, Texas and neighboring areas. In that time, the department has received a number of gifts from individuals and groups in order to help them perform their duty. One of the earliest gifts given to the Cleburne Police Department was a horse team. This gift was in memory of Deputy Sheriff J.B. "Pete" Day who passed away in 1871. The horse team was used by officers on patrol and also served as a source of transportation for officers during investigations. In 1896, the Cleburne Police Department acquired their first motor vehicle, a Ford Model T wagon. This vehicle was used as an ambulance and could be Ambulance No.'1 or Ambulance No.'2 depending on which side of town it occurred on service calls! In 1923, theCleburne Police Department became affiliated with the Dallas County Sheriff's Office under new sheriff John Hinkson Sr.. Under Hinkson Jr., donations were made in order to purchase new equipment such as vehicles and detective uniforms. In 1966, when Jerry Hill became sheriff, he decided to give back to his department by purchasing several surplus police cars from Dallas County! These cars were donated to Cleburne PD until they were retired in 1978-79 after being out of use for many years!!! A large part of what makes Cleburne Policemen so special is our unwavering support for one another both on and off duty! From fundraisers we hold each year like 'Cities On Wheels' where we collect money towards officer retirements/purchasing new gear/etc., allthe way up to our annual golf tournament (held at different locations around town), everyone within our unit works togetherto make sure that everyone enjoys themselves while working together! It truly is an amazing sight to see all 200+ officers present at any one event...It shows just how much love we put into this job!

Cleburne, Texas is a town in Potter County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area. The first settler in Cleburne was Lorenzo Green on November 13, 1836. In 1839, James Wilkinson and his family moved from Ayrshire to Cleburne in order to start a new life after being expelled from their home in Scotland. James Wilkinson had married Anna Letcher and they were the parents of four children: James (1840–1914), Lorenza (1843–1927), Isabella Jane (1845–1934) and Hugh Benson Wilkinson (1849–1921). The community grew rapidly due to steamboats running upriver towards Austin every day bringing settlers and goods such as livestock, crops, flour and lumber. In 1860, Andrew Jackson founded Palestine Baptist Church which became one of the most influential churches in Cleburne. The first post office was established in 1865 with Wm Higginson as its first clerk. The town's name came about when John Clements decided to name it "Cleburne" because his cattle were grazing on a burn near the current site of town. The townsite was platted by Jno Matson on December 12th, 1870 while he was working for John Sanger who had just relocated from Wichita Falls to founding his own railroad company - Houston & Texas Central Railway Company - later renamed TXCentral Railroad Company . Construction began on July 1st 1871 under contract from Jno Matson with General George Armstrong commanding US Army Corps of Engineers; Rated $1 million dollars for completion within six months! On November 3rd 1872 the first schoolhouse burned down leaving only three desks which served as classrooms until 1907 when a new school building was erected across Elm Street from what is now First Baptist Church . Classes commenced September 4th 1870 . In 1913 there were two more schools built – Mrs P Steele’s School (now Mrs McCann’s School ) at 214 Elm St., Drury Schools Annex at 411 Elm St., also known as Parkview School – this last one serving grades kindergarten through eighth grade until 1938 when it burned down along with all other buildings in that year’s fire tornado outbreak including Drury Elementary School “the old white girls” located west side Drive between Polk Street & Avenue D #2b years earlier following an act of vandalism by some changes made during annexation process resulting in loss or destruction of personal property valued over $5 000 !! With additions/modifications/updates being made throughout decades many Historicclevelandtx properties have been added back into use including wwwhistoricclevelandtx dot com providing online access to historical data specific to Cleburne !! CLEVELAND TEXAS PRESERVATION DISTRICT has also been created consisting entirely of land situated east side Drive between Polk Street & Avenue D #2b formerly belonging to University Of Texas System president Lyndon B Johnson !! This district encompasses portions of Potter County adjoining Dallas County line making it possible for CLEVELAND TEXAS PRESERVATION DISTRICT officially designation effective date 7/15/2018 ...........and finally………………….CLEBURNE

The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Brazos River and its natural resources such as oil and cotton. In 1861, Cleburne became a Confederate stronghold during the American Civil War. After the war, Cleburne was renamed Fort Worth and experienced rapid growth. In 1923, Fort Worth merged with Dallas to form Texas Central Station, which remains one of the largest transportation hubs in Texas today.

However, during Reconstruction era (1865-1877), Cleburne regained some of its former importance as a center for trade and industry. In addition to its role as a trade hub, Cleburne also became home to several large businesses such as John Lubbock's Sons & Hammersmith laundry company and Humble Oil Company. The community experienced significant growth during this period, but it eventually declined after World War II began to plummetheimer prices for cotton brought about by expanding production in other industries.Today, little remaining evidence exists from early Cleburne life
