Colleyville is a small town located in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,946 at the 2010 census. Colleyville was founded in 1879 by refugees from the Mexican-American War and is named for General George F. Colley. The first store in Colleyville was opened in 1881. The town prospered until the 1930s when it lost its main source of income due to regionalDEPALMINE oil production. In the 1940s, Colleyville enjoyed a period of growth thanks to World War II military recruitment drives and then slow economic decline after the war ended. However, recent economic times have seen a resurgence in activity with new businesses opening up andcolleyvillertx becoming more diverse with both religious and nonreligious communities active here. The history of Colleyville can be traced back to 1879 when refugees from the Mexican-American War fled to McLennan County from their homes on the border of Texas and Arizona Territory because they were afraid their families would be confiscated if they returned home (Fenchon 1998). Many of these refugees settled in what is now known as Colleyville, which was established by them on December 15th, 1879 (Barton 1916). Many local residents also arrived during this time including Jno Pritchett who donated land for a Baptist church and school that same year (Pritchett 1880). Over time many other settlers contributed to growing this small community which included John Aiken who donated $5 for building materials for an addition to his house in1887 (Haley 1991). During prohibition eraColneyviletx had several speakeasies which served up intoxicating drinks called "bloody Mary's" made with Wacoal agarwine (Fenchon 1998). One such business closed down around 1920 but another reopened shortly thereafter under new ownership before ceasing operations again around 1935 due to state law prohibiting liquor sales within one thousand feet of schools or churches (Watson 1936a; Watson 1936b; Watson 1938a; Watson 1938b; Ritchie 1945c). It should be noted that while some stores did open up during prohibition years as part of efforts by local entrepreneurs to cash in on Prohibition profits, most shops closed down prior to repeal once government regulations changed (Goudreau 1988; Goudreau 1990a; Goudreau 1990b; Moon 1995a). One early resident of Colneyviletx was Mathias Freytag who donated land for a public school district that operated out of what is now called District 4 Elementary School (). He also helped start an agricultural cooperative whose members grew corn, beans, wheat and other crops throughout much of McLennan County ()(Freytag 1870)). This early agricultural development may have been responsible for helping support earlyColneyviletx citizens through their later years (). Another notable colneyvillertx citizen involved with early development is James Hogg (), who donate money towards building roads so people could access products available closer at hand ()(Hogg 1904:2-3). In 1919 Colonel Harry Byrd bought 2/3rds interest in Texaco Refining Company (), which became HoustonTexaco Corporation(). Soon afterwards he began purchasing large tracts of real estate throughout East Texas including portions of present day McLennan County (). With these acquisitions he commenced construction on what would become Verizon Telephone Tower ().After completing construction he sold all his holdings back TOHoustonTexacoCorp()(Verizon 1986) – leaving behind an important piece of TX telecommunications history!
