The name "Conroe" originated from two early settlers, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Conroe, who founded a log cabin on a creek near present day Humble Road and Live Oak Drive in 1836. This settlement was first known as Prairie View A&M University because it had been established by Texans led by Congressman James Kenedy as an agricultural school for white students in 1837. The town site was chosen due to its proximity to several important military installations during World War II: I-10 within easy driving distance and AFRL just outside of town limits made it convenient for researchers conducting missile tests and other research activities at both institutions. In the 1920s oil began flowing out of ground deep under Ahlborn Field adjacent to I-10 near FM 19606 where today's ExxonMobil refinery is located; this created an enormous demand for transportation fuel which caused much construction around town including new shopping malls (the first in TX), hospitals (Houston Methodist Hospital & Memorial Hermann Medical Center), schools (Humble Independent School District #1 & #2), churches (First Baptist Church & Christ United Methodist Church), homesites surrounded by dozens of miles of pipelines that stretched from Gulf Coast refineries all the way down into Mexico City – making Conroe one of the most heavily populated places on Earth during that time period! Conroe is a town in Houston County, Texas, United States. The population was 21,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The name Conroe comes from two different places: "Conejo" meaning a small stream and "Roe", meaning a post office. The first post office opened in 1881 and was known as White Settlement until 1907 when it became Conroe. The original courthouse was one of the first buildings constructed in Texansville when that community was founded in 1836. A fire destroyed the courthouse on November 3, 1886 and replaced it with a new building in 1889 which served as both local government center for the community and court house until 1974 when it became home to Rice University's Main Campus. In 1954, plans were made to move Texas State Highway 6 (now I-610) from its original routing northward through Conroe to serve as an expressway bypassing downtownHouston; however, this proposal failed to gain approval from city leaders and instead was shelved until 1966 when Interstate 610 south of downtown was built concurrently with US-60 east of town. In 1975, I-610/US-60 interchange reconstruction began just west of town while concurrent construction continued along US-360 northwest of town resulting in the closure of FM 1960 between these two highways for nearly four years during which time many homes were demolished to make way for new freeway construction In 1984, state Route 69A (now Loop 410) designation replaced US-360/FM 1960 within Conroe limits while concurrent construction continued along current FM 1960 eastbound intotown resulting in reopening FM 1960 eastbound during 1985 campaign season after previous closure due to lack of funding Race riots occurred around Houston between September 29th & October 7th1985 breaking out throughout Sugar Land & Clear Lake Counties killing at least 30 people injuring over 150
