Conroe is a city in Houston County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The name Conroe comes from French for "Beautiful Creek." The creek provides water to Conroe and other small towns near it. On November 12, 1836, Colonel James K. Polk and his force of Texans under the command of General Sam Houston crossed over the river Atchafalaya and marched on Corpus Christi to meet Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna who had surrendered that day at San Jacinto Heights. One hundred men were given this order but only thirty-six men including Foust returned home with their arms due to heavy rains that night and cold weather conditions outside; many drowned trying to cross the river during its swollen state.
