In 1923 the name was changed to Conroe after J.W. Conroe Sr., who served as mayor from 1923 to 1925 and 1929 to 1933; he also donated land for the present school system at what is now known as McCullough Park II (). The population of Conroe grew rapidly during World War II due to military bases being constructed nearby such as Fort Worth Army Base and Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery (). The first store opened in 1903 and by 1910 there were 9 stores in the community. Businesses grew so rapidly that by 1935 there were over 30 facilities employing over 1,000 people. In 1945 an airfield was built adjacent to the original townsite for use by Air Force pilots training at Fort Worth Municipal Airport north of downtown Dallas; this airport would later be renamed Fort Worth Regional Airport after John F Kennedy Jr.'s election as President of America). By 1957 almost all manufacturing had been discontinued within the city limits due to competition from larger cities such as Dallas or Houston; however some businesses did continue operations until 1973 when deregulation took effect which led to many local companies disappearing along with their jobs.
