Converse is a city in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town of Converse was founded in 1872 by John P. Converse and others as a rural community on the San Jacinto River between Medina and Houston counties. In 1876, it was named for US Senator James K. Polk because he had been its founder and first mayor. The population reached 536 in 1880 but declined to 698 by 1890 after the railroad arrived from Galveston and other settlements along the river valley. However, it grew rapidly again during World War I with new housing developments and businesses being built along Loop 610 South near downtown Converse In 1920, Converse became an independent city when it annexed land east of Highway 6 on Tuesday Road adjacent to present day University Park Elementary School; this annexation left Medina County unaffected by cityhood untillater that year when it merged into Houston County with its other cities as part of a larger countywide consolidation plan enacted under Governor Sam Houston II. When Houston County seceded from Texas in 1930, Converse remained within Medina County despite becoming anindependent city In 1951, residents voted to change their name to "ConversE" following a contest sponsored by then-Mayor John Aiken who said that "the town should be called something new every few years so people can get used to it." After several decades of use as "ConversE", the current nickname began being popularized locally beginning in 1984 when then-Councilman Donny Ferguson purchased what is now known as City Hall property adjoining Sixth Street just north of Interstate 45 exit 113A which served as both home office space for City Council (until 1985) and municipal court until 2006 when jurisdiction moved to Harris County facilities located next door at FirstEnergy Stadium). During this time period too numerous businesses opened up inside what is now known officially as City Hall building - such As Bearly's BBQ & Grille (now Burger King), China Buffet (now Hooters), Westside Pizza (now Papa Johns), Gold's Gym (now Gold's Gym South), [and] North Face Outfitters before finally settling upon Center Court which served primarily as mayor’s personal residence from 1984 through 2006; later Stillwell’s Liquor Store relocated there too following Mayor Stillwell’s death in 2006 Since 2000 though all services have been conducted out of newly constructed Northgate Centre complex located off IH 45 south just past Beltway 8 near FM 3593 This complex also houses fire department operations including EMS/Fire Rescue service operations including paramedic or ambulance support providing medical backup for law enforcement activities during events or special occasions such as large fireworks displays or rodeo events . In addition there are 2 full size basketball courts available for use by spectators

In the early 1940s, the United States Air Force was founded with the goal of providing air support for American forces in World War II. In 1941, General George S. Patton served as the first Commander in Chief of the USAF and directed Operation Neptune's Spear, which led to the Japanese surrender. In 1947, General Curtis LeMay became Chairman of Continental Airlines and directed a program called "Operation Varsity" which resulted in the landing of 9 million passengers on American soil during World War II. The post-war years saw significant growth within the USAF and its predecessor organizations such as Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and Strategic Air Command (SAC). During this time period, USAF aeronautical technology grew from piston-powered bombers to jet aircraft carriers and intercontinental ballistic missiles.During Eisenhower's presidency, America entered into an expensive Cold War with Russia. As part of this effort,the USAF developed Project Mercury which aimed to create a human spaceflight capability by flying astronauts into orbit using advanced rockets and spacecraft. However, these plans were met with opposition from Congress who felt that space exploration should be left to private sector companies like NASA. Gradually however, Congressional support for space exploration increased as America began looking to compete head-to-head with China in terms of technological innovation. By 1973 President Richard Nixon had established NASA as an independent agency under his jurisdiction and began developing programs like Apollo 11 which led to humans being sent into space for the first time ever in 1969.
