The first people who settled in what is now Converse were Anglo-Saxon settlers from England who came overland during the 1840s en route to Texas. They built log cabins along what is now I-10 and called their settlement "Nacoochee." In 1853 they moved into permanent homes when they acquired land grant from President James Kenedy that included present-day Converse Township. At first most residents worked on rented property within walking distance of their homes but soon began raising livestock and haying hay for local mills which supplied feed for their animals and sold produce at local stores such as those located in downtown Fort Worth or north of town on Elm Street near State Highway 103 (now Interstate 20). Eventually many citizens bought or leased land within present day Converse limits making it possible for them to build more substantial buildings including churches, schools, cotton farms etc., which remain extant today despite having been destroyed by fire or other natural disasters over time. The early days were difficult because there was no means for transportation other than horseback or wagon trip which took hours each way so goods had to be transported long distances especially since there was no railroad through this area at that time. To make things worse, disease took hold quickly among these pioneer settlers which caused widespread death including many children under 5 years old who died from measles just before Independence Day 1845 when Texans achieved their independence from Mexico under Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna Many pioneers also lost their lives while prospecting for oil shale located just beyond our current boundaries looking for sites where oil could be produced according to prevailing beliefs at that time although this claim has been debunked numerous times as well as being unsupported by any scientific evidence In 1881 John Hance purchased 640 acres (260 ha) northwest of present dayConverse beginning what would become known as Hance Rancho Noe Valley Agrarian Settlement . The population of the town peaked at 10,000 in 1910, but declined rapidly due to various factors such as the Panic of 1907 and World War I. In 1920, the town lost its county seat status to Amarillo and remained a small community until it merged with Midland into the new Perry County on January 1, 1933.
