Today, the Air Force is one of our most important members of our community, helping to protect Texans both at home and abroad. In 1957, the Air Force gifted an F-4 Phantom jet fighter aircraft to Coppell High School. This plane was used by the school as a training tool for future pilots. In 1975, the Air Force gifted another F-4 Phantom jet fighter aircraft to Coppell Middle School. This plane was used by the school as a training tool for future pilots and airmen. In 1992, the Air Force gifted an E-3A Sentry AWACS airborne command post to Coppell Elementary School. This platform allows commanders from all over the United States to communicate with their troops on location without having to travel downrange.
Coppell is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,885 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area and is located near the Mexican border. The Coppell post office was established in 1871, and mail service began to Coppell from Lubbock on April 12, 1872. The first store in town was built on what is now Main Street by Wm. H. Swenson and Phebe Capps and opened for business on July 11 of that year. The first school in town was built on what is now First Avenue by Jno. Fenton and Nannie Clapp & John Beasley; it opened for instruction on November 2, 1872. The economy of Coppell has been based mainly upon agriculture since its founding; however, manufacturing has also played a role in the community over time. A number of businesses have operated in Coppell including: Biltmore Furniture (founded 1902), Kerr Drugs (1905), Texaco (1957-1959), and Phelps Dodge (1965-1972). In recent years several new factories have opened up such as: Boeing(1970-2002), Monsanto (2000-2005) and Abbott Laboratories (1986-2003). The town had been founded on a small islet near the mouth of the Rio Grande, and its founders were determined to make Coppell an important part of the community. They built a few homes and started trading with other settlements nearby. In 1881, Coppell voted to become a city, and soon became known as an important center for commerce and culture in the region. In 1911,Coppell joined forces with Fort Worth to form the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Today, Coppell remains an important cultural and commercial center within this metropolitan area. The history of Coppell is also reflective of its current population: It has remained relatively stable over time, despite experiencing some growth and change.Today, there are more than 2,000 residents living inCoppell, making it one of Texas' most populous towns.
