The United States Army Garrison in Coppell, Texas was established in 1881. The garrison was part of the Department of Texas and was responsible for the defense of Texan soil and interests abroad. The current structure of the Army Garrison is a result of an act by Congress on February 27, 1888. This act created the Post Office Department and authorized the appropriation of $5,000 to be used to improve transportation within and between Fort Worth and Fort Sam Houston. Additionally, $2,500 were appropriated to provide for military stores at both posts. In 1890, a further appropriation enabled the erection of barracks at present day’s Soldiers’ Home Building on Elm Street in Coppell. During World War I (1914-1918), Fort Sam Houston became Camp Bowie Heights as Headquarters for Headquarters Squadron 2nd Cavalry Division. On October 15th 1918 Major General John J Pershing ordered all American forces out of Mexico City following the Mexican Revolution which began on October 22nd that year. The army garrison there was reactivated on November 10th 1918 under Lieutenant Colonel Harry S Hilliard commanding Third Brigade Combat Team with headquarters at Camp Bowie Heights until relieved by First Brigade Combat Team under Brigadier General Clarence F Nicholson on December 15th 1918 just before Christmas holidays when operations stopped due to winter weather conditions across most of North America including Mexico City where troops had evacuated days earlier because President Wilson had declared war against Germany When World War II started on September 10th 1939 America had mobilized almost 120 million men plus women and children into service with nearly 50% participation in combat units over three years since mobilization began This paper will not discuss every individual unit or campaign fought during World War II but will focus specifically on two main campaigns near Coppell TX; Operation Neptune’s Spear which took place from December 20-27, 1944 and Battle Of El Paso which lasted from January 7-15 1945 It should be noted that during these wars many tens if not hundreds if not thousands more soldiers died than actually serve in our Armed Forces today making this history very complex indeed

The United States Army has a rich history in Coppell, Texas. The city was founded on January 6, 1836, by Colonel James Bowie and his regiment of cavalry. The city was named for General David Crockett, who fought against Indian raids in the area. The first post office in Coppell opened in 1839. In 1860, the US Cavalry Regiment was mustered into service as the 3rd Texas Infantry Regiment and became known as the Coppell Light Horsemen. In 1861, the 1st Texas Infantry Regiment also served in Coppell and became known as the Richardson Rangers before being disbanded in 1865. The 2nd Texas Infantry Regiment stationed here from 1865-1868 before being redesignated as Company A of the 9th Texas Infantry Regiment which served until it disbanded in 1887. In 1915, Major General John J Pershing orderedthe 10th Airborne Division to be activated here at Corpus Christi Air Base. After World War I ended, Detachment C of this division remained inactive at Corpus Christi Air Base until it was reactivated at Fort Sam Houston Museum on October 26, 1947 under command of Major General Earl Swope with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron located at Randolph AFB TX while detachments D-1 through D-9 were assigned to various installations around the country including Fort Worth AB TX; Alameda AB CA; Beaumont TX; Nacogdoches TX; San Antonio TX; Massena NY; etc On July 16th 1950 elements of 199th Abn Service Brigade (Airmobile) landed on Isleta Beach County Airport nearest to Socorro NM when units numbered ROKAF B-29B “Peggy Noonan” belonging to 447th Bomb Wing (WAC) participating #501st Bombardment Group performing combat operations over Korea were diverted from Japan after their engine caught fire over South Korea while en route home following a mission flown from Andersen AFB HI flying altimeter calibration equipment back to Wright–Patterson AFB OH after an aborted takeoff caused by weather conditions near Pyongyang North Korea On February 3rd 1951 elements of 511st Troop Carrier Wing ( Tactical ) attached to 82d Troop Carrier Wing participated escort carrier USS Pueblo during amphibious landing exercise "Operation Magic Carpet" off Kwajalein Atoll involved 509 passengers and 13 crewmembers with weapons embarked via USS Coral Sea (CVN 71) escort carrier providing cover for amphibious assault landing vehicles embarked on LSTs conducted direct landings without supporting aircraft
