The Copperas Cove Air Force Base was one of the first Air Forces installations in Texas when it opened in 1952. In 1865, Copperas Cove had a population of 350 people and it served as the county seat until 1868 when San Antonio took over that role. During this time, one of the most important events in local history occurred when Captain James Kenedy organized what is now called Kenedy's Battalion to fight for Texas during the American Civil War.
