By 1920, Copperas Cove had become one of the largest copper mining towns in Texas with an estimated production of over $100 million per year. Production ceased in 1984 but metal has been recovered from abandoned mines throughout Tarrant County ever since. The abandoned mine communities have been home to many different types of animals including llamas, horses, pigs and deer over the years- all some of which are still living today thanks to conservation efforts by local residents and volunteers!

Over time, other Europeans followed Soto's lead and found new land around Copperas Cove including parts of what is now Tarrant County. In 1859, prospectors discovered copper ore at Copperas Cove which soon became an important part of the Comal County economy. In 1865, silver was also discovered at Copperas Cove which helped contribute to the growth of this community. By 1880, Copperas Cove had become one of Texas' most significant mining towns with over 1,000 residents working at various copper mines throughout Tarrant County. The closure of many Comal Mine Mines during 1984-1985 resulted in a decrease in population size by about 50%. However, much like many other communities across North Texas that have faced economic hardship due to mining closures, Copperas Cove has seen some revitalization since then thanks to its unique history and ongoing efforts by local citizens and businesses alike to maintain its cultural significance and popularity among visitors!
