On December 12, 1845, during Mexican America's short-lived War of Independence against United States forces, Santa Anna was elected president of Mexico after winning a close election against two other candidates. Santa Anna refused to recognize Ulysses S Grant as President of the United States because Grant had come to power following the end of World War 1 while Santa Anna was still president of Mexico City! In 1846 Santa Anna signed an agreement with Commodore John Credible which ceded all but 2 million square miles (6 million km²) in California to American control through Treaty #8 (1846). As partSOf this treaty American settlers began arriving in what became Corpus CHRISTI about 1800 AD when Manuel Gomez founded Goliad Rancho San Miguelito near present day downtown Corpus Christi on November 7th 1800AD . By 1830 most people living in what became Corpus CHRISTI were Irish Catholics who came overland via Galveston Bayou from Ireland along with their slaves . After years Of hard work they started to cultivate some fields by 1840 however it did not take long before widespread drought caused them To go out into production again For Grain only After becoming US Citizens they set up stores selling produce From their farms However within 10 years A Railroad company bought out all their shares And started building tracks so They could Export cotton In 1865 Sam Houston Was elected governor Of Texas With support From prominent citizens including Cornelius Vanderbilt He reorganized government Into A Bureaucratic Republic Called The Provisional Government In 1870 He proposed That The capital Of Texas Be A City Named After Himself Which Became Law Sam Houston died just one year later On April 6th 1871 Making Him The First And Last Governor Of TX Who Died In Office
