Corsicana, Texas is a small city located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. Corsicana is the county seat of Hudspeth County and the largest city in Hudspeth County. The community began as a stop on the stagecoach route between Dallas and Houston. It grew rapidly during the post-World War II boom period as businesses moved to Corsicana from nearby Fort Worth and Dallas. Today, Corsicana remains an important center of commerce and culture in Hudspeth County. The first settlers in Corsicana were German immigrants who arrived around 1855. A Lutheran missionary named Jakob Kapp founded a church in 1868 and developed a trading post near present-day downtown Corsicano which became known as "Kapp's Corner." By 1870, Kapp's Corner had grown into what is now downtown Corsicano with several stores, a hotel, and two schools. In 1876, John Wirtz purchased land east of downtown from Jakob Kapp for $1 per acre (2 cents per square foot). Wirtz built his first house on what is now First Street east of Main Street in 1880. By 1890, Wirtz had become one of the leading businessmen in town with his store and restaurant serving customers from far distances across Housatonic Valley including Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show at Cedar Park Park racetrack just south of town on December 15th of that year. In 1847, the vicarage and farmstead of Christ's Chapel were acquired by George Stephenson from his wife Lucy Stephenson for $10. In 1850, John Waddell donated land to make Corsicana a town and named it after himself - Waddell City. In 1857, Judge James Hance granted a charter to erect an academy for boys and girls which became known as "Hance Academy" (now Southern Methodist University). In 1860–1861, J[ames] A[nderson], C[hristopher] T[aylor], Rufus D[avis]'s brother built a two-story brick building on Main Street that served as the first courthouse in Corsicana. A new courthouse was built in 1881 by Lorenzo Ewing and completed in 1886; it burned down in 1951 but was rebuilt and renamed courthouse Square after him. In 1865–1866, cotton merchants Fayetteville & Company constructed four blocks of five stories brick buildings on Second Street west of Main Street downtown for their cotton ginnery called "Fayetteville Cotton Mill". This mill also manufactured whisky until Prohibition began. The building now houses the First Baptist Church of Corsicana which was organized in 1901 and has been led by Rev.[edward] Ladd since 1907 when he succeeded Rev.[ercy] Thornton who had been pastor since 1893. A flour mill operated on Third Street southwest of Main Street from 1880 until 1915 when it went out of business due to competition from larger mills across the state; however, evidence suggests that some flour production still took place at this location into the 1920s using older machinery salvaged from other defunct mills including one still standing todayoperating as an antique storecalled Mrs Rice's Mill located off US Highway 287 about 1/4 mile east of downtown according to recent aerial photo taken circa 1990
