Corsicana is a town in Cooke County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,594 at the 2010 census. Corsicana is the county seat of Cooke County. The first European to visit Corsicana was Father José de Urrea y Fuentes on October 8, 1797. He and his party of Jesuits established a mission station near what is now downtown Corsicana. On July 6, 1827, James Fenton founded the town of Fenton on the Brazos River east of modern-day Corsicana after finding that settlers were fleeing to Texansville due to Indian attacks there. In 1856, John Hagenbeck organized a group of farmers who formed The Houston & Texas Central Railroad Company and named their new city after himself and his brothers Jacob (Johannes) Hagenbeck and Peter Cornelius Hagenbeck. They began construction on a railroad line from Galveston south to Houston but were forced to abandonment because of financial problems. In 1865, John Waddell located an oil well off FM 925 north of present-day Corsicana in what would later become Parkland County and named it Waddell Well No. 1 after him and fellow pioneer Colonel James Peebles Waddell Jr.. A year later he drilled another well nearby which gave rise to the name Parkland County Oil Field today’s Midland Oilfield Complex west of Midland City as well as part of Anadarko Petroleum Corporation’s Barnett Shale field in Parker County which contains some world-renowned oil reserves totaling more than 100 billion barrels! In 1907 Eben Upton founded Upton Paper Mill in downtown Corsicana where cotton papermaking had been done for centuries before being replaced by other products such as corrugated cardboard Knoppers are still produced here today! In 1912 Sam Rayburn became Speaker Of The House Of Representatives from TexarkANA – making him one of only two Ulysses S Grant Governors ever impeached! Mexican American War veteran Manuel Garcia started working at Upton Paper Mill soon afterwards Making it one of America’s oldest Latino owned businesses still running today! In 1945 Sam Rayburn was elected Vice President under Franklin D Roosevelt becoming America’s first Hispanic American Prime Minister! While most residents have long memories about their favorite local businesses or events from childhood they do remember some key moments during their community history: when Scott High School opened its doors in 1955; when Enterprise Downs Golf Course opened its doors in 1965; when Hurricane Ike hit Prairie View A&M University on August 29th Ike destroyed much property including many homes leaving many students homeless; when World War II veterans returned home following the war ended; when Crosstown Airlines moved its headquarters from Amarillo to Dallas/Fort Worth international Airport just outside Dallas with plans for eventually moving back here permanently – all these milestones helped make Corsicanna an important community resourceToday it remains a thriving agricultural center with cornhusks being processed into hundreds of items such as flour tortillas breakfast tacos lunch chili dogs dinner gumbo pies French toast biscuits
