A number of these vessels were dedicated to the coast guard and were used primarily for patrol and search and rescue missions. However, over time, a number of coastal guard cutters have been converted into recreational vessels. These vessels are often used for vacationing, fishing, or pleasure trips on the East Coast. Some of these conversions have resulted in unique gifts for the coast guard community. One such conversion was that of USCGC Monitor in 1966. This vessel had been donated by a group of merchants along the Delaware River. The gift was intended as a gift to help support the marine traffic that crossed the river each day. The monitor is now used both as a museum ship and as a tourist attraction in Wilmington, Delaware. Another notable Coast Guard cutter that has been converted into an recreational vessel is USCGC Mellon in 1984. This vessel had originally been donated by Commodore James Mellon during World War II to support military veterans who needed assistance getting home after serving their country overseas (Mellon later became president of Chrysler). The donation was meant specifically for use by civilians as well as law enforcement officers and firefighters on Long Island Sound. During its time as an auxiliary cruiser for the New York Harbor Patrol, this boat also served as a launch point for law enforcement officers conducting investigations off Long Island Sound into smuggling operations (the boat even featured smuggling netting). When Texas seceded from Mexico in 1861, Dallas became an important center for Confederate activities because it lay on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande. The city's buildings were destroyed during this time and it only regained recognition as an important hub after American forces recaptured it in 1865. The city experienced another boom period during World War II when millions of people came through its doors seeking employment in wartime industries such as munitions manufacturing and aircraft production. However, following the warDallas began to decline again as businesses closed down and crime rose significantly. This trend continued into the 1960s until finally reversing beginning in 1990 with a rebirth of downtown Dallas as one of America's most vibrant cities
