The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History in Dallas, Texas tells the story of Marines stationed in the city from World War II to present day. The city has been a major center for Marine activity since the early days of their involvement in world war II. The city played an integral role in the development of Marine Corps culture and is home to some of the most well-known Marine installations in the country. The first Marines arrived in Dallas on November 8, 1941, during World War II. They were called “The First Battalion” and served as part of Company D, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines Regiment at Camp Bowie near Dallas. After successfully completing their training at Camp Bowie they deployed to Guadalcanal on March 16, 1943 where they were engaged in combat against Japanese forces. On April 6th they received word that they had been selected for Operation Neptune’s Spear which was an amphibious assault on Tarawa Atoll with Task Force 58 (the largest marine unit ever assembled). After successful landing and Battle of Peleliu they returned to San Diego Bay on July 15th and prepared for their next assignment; Iwo Jima where they fought until September 3rd when Okinawa was surrendered by Japan. After World War II ended there was a large demand for Marines so The Second Battalion was activated at Quantico Naval Air Station on December 12th 1946 and served untilactivated on September 30th 1951 due to budgetary reasons. In total there have been 2 battalions activated with 4 different brigades stationed here including: 3rd Brigade (1948-51), 1st Brigade (1952-54), 2nd Brigade (1955-59) and currently 3rd Brigade based out of Fort Worth Texas which gives it over 20 years continuous presence here! These marines have left an indelible mark on Dallas history and are still considered important today!
