Deer Park is a small town located in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1881 by John A. Hoyt and his family after they drove out deer that had become common on their farmstead. Hoyt named the settlement "Deer Park" because he saw no other place to settle and because deer were then the predominant animal in the area. A post office was established in Deer Park in 1883, and remained in operation until it closed in 1936. The first store opened in 1884, and the first public school opened in 1886. The first doctor arrived in 1890, and death certificates for residents from that year list only one name: John A. Hoyt. In 1904, Deercreek Dam was completed adjacent to Deer Park Lake which created a new water source for the community used by all of nearby towns including Arlington Heights and Richardson Hills as well as many rural farms as far away as Grand Prairie and Tyler TX.. Hoyt donated land to build Arlington Heights Cemetery on what is now Uptown Boulevard just east of Interstate 635 within sight of Deer Park Lake where people could sunbathe or play guitar while looking at newly built graves dotting a idyllic landscape with views of downtown Fort Worth across Lake Travis to the south-west; Dallas to the north-east;and Wichita Falls (also within easy driving distance) In 1924, Arlington Heights boasted its own movie theater called "The Ark". This structure burned down on July 25th 1944 during an Army training exercise but not before showing features such as Gone Withthe Wind (1939), Ben Hur (1959), Casablanca (1942), Chariots Of Fire (1981), It's A Wonderful Life (1946), The Three Musketeers (1860) All Star Westerns were shown . . . In 1949 when Arlington Heights Elementary School caught fire due to overloading from students trying out for school plays this elementary school also served grades PreK thru 8th grade which made arson less likely since there would be plenty of time for parents/guardians to pick up their children afterwards without having them return home preoccupied with firefighting
