The Del Rio Coast Guard Station was built in 1933 and has been active ever since. The station is a part of the Texas Department of Public Safety and is responsible for law enforcement on the Texas Gulf Coast. In 1934, the coast guard station was renamed to current name, Del Rio Coast Guard Station. The coast guard station has been a part of the DPS since 1935. In 1935, the state of Texas activated the Del Rio Coast Guard Station as part of its response to a hurricane that had struck Galveston Island. At that time, only boats could provide rescue services and there wasn’t enough manpower or money available to send any more people or equipment to help with relief efforts. The coast guard station stayed activated until 1966 when it was closed down due to budget cuts within DPS. Today, the coast guard station remains active as an education institution providing career training opportunities for local law enforcement officers.
