In the early 1800s, many Texans traveled to the east for goods and services. One of these men was Major General James K. Polk, who in 1845 arrived in Denton with his army to help suppress a slave insurrection. He purchased land near what is now The University of Texas at Denton and began construction on what would become one of America’s largest military installations. The first building on the campus was called “Campbell Barracks,” and it served as Headquarters for the Mexican War until 1850. In 1861, General Polk ordered Lieutenant Colonel Sumner to build Fort Worth Military College in order to prepare soldiers for war against Confederate States of America (CSA). This fortification would play an important role in the Texas Campaign that followed. In 1865, after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Texas became Union territory. As part of this deal, Union General Ulysses S. Grant put Fort Worth Military College back into operation as a military academy where he could train future generals like John F.[John] McCain And George W[George W.] Bush

Denton, Texas is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 157,815 at the 2010 census. Denton is the largest city in Midland County and the fifth-largest municipality in Texas. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Denton was founded by prospectors John Wesley Hardin and James Hogg on December 14, 1839, as an area known as "New Town". The first post office opened in Denton on January 1, 1840. By 1845, Denton had become a town with a population of around 100 people. In 1853 it became the county seat of Midland County. In 1861 Denton became one of twelve townships within Travis County; this annexation set off a struggle between pro-annexation Texans and anti-annexation Texans who called themselves "The Know Nothing" movement or "Protestant Democrats". The violence climaxed when pro-annexationists burned down parts of what would later become downtown Denton on October 10th 1861 while protesting against local government annexation into Travis County; this event helped spur the creation of the Ku Klux Klan in America. On November 3rd 1861 voters approved an ordinance giving all male citizens over 21 years old to vote without having to pay property taxes (the first municipally mandated voter turnout). The decision reversed centuries of white supremacy and Voting Rights Act Enforcement activity that had been taking place in Travis County since Reconstruction ended following the American Civil War. In 1902 construction began on then statehood-dedicated Memorial Auditorium which served as both a cultural center for North Texasaundersthe Dallas Symphony Orchestra from 1915 until its merger with Philharmonic Dallas in 1967 and then again from 2007 until relocating to SouthPark Center for Performing Arts beginning in 2013 before serving as home theater complex for several events annually including ACL Live! during their Festival season from 2019 through 2024 before moving back into Memorial Auditorium starting with their inaugural show there on May 17th 2020 under new management led by Artistic Director Jeff Wadsworth continuing through to his retirement effective September 15th 2026 less than two months after his final show at Memorial Auditorium having directed more live shows there than any other person including David Stone Martin

Denton, Texas is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas on the border of Fort Worth and Arlington. The community was founded in 1881 by businessmen from Denton County and other nearby counties who set up a trading post and mill. By 1907, the population had grown to about 1,500 residents. The first school in Denton was built in 1885. In 1911, the city of Denton was incorporated with a population of around 2500 people. The city's first mayor was C.W. Peet. In 1934, the City Council passed an ordinance that prohibited discrimination against citizens based on race or religion. In 1959, Denton became home to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport when it was opened byPresident Dwight Eisenhower as part of his Interstate 10 project. The airport has since become one of the busiest in the country; it serves both commercial and military users with several terminals and numerous aircraft parking lots. In 2002, Denton received approval from the United States Department of Transportation for a $325 million expansion that will add two new large airports terminals and more than 20 acres (80 hectares) of runway space at I-10 & I-635 interchange near downtown. This should provide increased access to jobs within minutes' walk for visitors to Downtown Denton as well as help improve air quality in what is already one of North Texas' most polluted cities
