The Denton County Coast Guard has been providing safety and security along the Texas Gulf Coast for over 80 years. The Coast Guard was established in 1909 as a result of the Spanish-American War when it became necessary to protect shipping on the Corpus Christi Bay. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has responded to numerous emergencies, including Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, earthquakes, lightning strikes, wildfires, and more. Today, the Coast Guard provides support through community partnerships and an ever expanding network of volunteers. In 2017 alone, they saved over $1 million in recovered property and assets from harm’s way. Additionally, they provide training to local law enforcement officers and emergency responders throughout Denton County. In commemoration of their long history in Denton County and dedication to public service, the Denton County Coast Guard donated two new helicopters to be used by law enforcement during Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. In 1944, the Commandant of the Coast Guard Headquarters moved from Corpus Christi to Denton and activated a detachment of the 9th CoastGuard District. That detachment was redesignated as the 1st Coastal Patrol Group in 1951 and then as the 9th Marine Division. In 1958, both groups were combined under one command and became known as the 9th Coast Guard District. The district's headquarters moved from Denton to San Antonio in 1961 and its detachments were redesignated as units within that headquarters. From 1974-1978, each division within the district had its own commandant but all divisions were merged into one commandant - this office remained until 1996 when it was disbanded due to budget cuts.
Denton is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 118,887 at the 2010 census. Denton is the county seat of Midland County. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The city was founded by settlers from Texas in 1854 and became an important local trade center with its location on the Arkansas River between Dallas and Fort Worth. The city's first annexation took place in 1873 when it seceded from Midland County to become its own municipality. In 1966, Denton annexed Arlington Heights, adding 6,000 residents to its population that year alone. The current form ofgovernment for Denton began operations on January 1, 1973 when Mayor Hilda Solis appointed City Councilwoman Gayle King as Mayor pro tem; this body later became known as the City Council. On July 1, 1974, the City of Denton annexed portions of Garland and Flower Mound municipalities which had merged to form Garland-Flower Mound Township (later McLennan), making it one municipality with two counties within its borders. A new annexation took place on December 15, 1984 when White Rock Township surrendered its incorporation as part of a larger reorganization effort within Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Police Department that resulted in more than doubling police officer numbers without reducing infrastructure costs or citizen input; White Rock now forms the eastern edge of Denton proper while flowers can be seen near Interstate 40 outside downtown during morning rush hour traffic - evidence that White Rock has accepted annexation into Denton proper since 1984!
