One of the first soldiers to come to Desoto was José Antonio Carrillo, who arrived in 1821. He became a soldier in the Mexican-American War and was promoted to captain. In 1827, he married Dolores Guerra and they started a family. In 1830, Carrillo's unit fought against Texan forces at Palo Alto Bridge. After the battle, Carrillo received an order from Santa Anna ordering him to return home. However, on his way home, Carrillo met General Mariano de la Cruz and decided to stay in Texas instead. From here on out, Carrillo became one of Santa Anna's most trusted advisors. In 1836, General Antonio Lopez y Costilla ordered Captain Juan Bautista Medina to march on Corpus Christi with 1,000 men for protection purposes. The townspeople refused to let Medina take them by force so he made his way back home unarmed with only a Bible and some ammunition. He arrived in Corpus Christi unopposed but found that there were already refugees living there due to the Battle of San Jacinto which ended Mexican independence from Spain). On October 14th of that year (1836), Medina sent word for all Texans east of Houston not to come into town because "the Mexicans are coming". By November 10th (1836), about 2,500 Texans had assembled outside the city limits near what is now MidtownHouston awaiting news from Medina about what would happen next. As it turned out, Major Elias Rodriguez led a cavalry charge into Mexican City without orders and captured it without any casualties before withdrawing without having accomplished anything). This event later came known as The Roelling Raid which solidified Anglo control over south Houston while also demonstrating Anglo hostility towards Mexicans within their own community! Captain José Antonio Carrillo returned home after serving two terms as Governor of Coahuila (now southernMexico) during President James Kenedy’s term between 1849-1850[1]. For his services during those years including subduing border bandits,[2], he was posthumously awarded the Medal Of Honor by President Franklin D Roosevelt in 1938[3]. After retiring from active duty service in 1850,[4] Captain Carrillo settled down locally where he died on December 11th,. Desoto, Texas is a town located in Houston County, Texas. The population was 10,834 at the 2000 census. It was founded by Mexican immigrants in 1836. The original name of the town was San Jacinto de las Flores (Saint John's of Flores). In 1861, it became known as Victoria after Queen Victoria of England. The post office called Desoto "Victoria" until 1907. The first white person to live in Desoto was José Antonio “Pete” Pérez who came over on the USS Constitution on July 4, 1836. He and his family were among the earliest settlers in what would become Houston County. Pete Perez died in 1840 at age 32 from smallpox contracted while living near Victoria. His wife María Elizabeth Valenzuela Sánchez also settled here and had six children with José Antonio Pérez: Francisco Xavier Valenzuela (1837-1905), José JoaquínValenzuela (1839-1920), Manuel IgnacioValenzuela (1841-1921), Pedro González Valenzuela (1843-1922), Vicente Taveras Valenzuela (1845-1925) and Clara TeresaTaveras Valenzuela () . In 1861, when Houston County was created from lands east of Montrose Plantation west of Prairie Road, Victoria became the site of a county courthouse and jail complex which replaced an earlier toll road built by James Kenedy to provide transportation for local cotton farmers south to Galveston Bayou for ship loading and shipment back north during the early cotton years following American independence. At this time Desoto included much of present dayHouston County within its borders although there are no direct physical evidence that any such boundaries ever existed or even were felt necessary given Victoria's central location withinHouston County proper as well as easy access to both Galveston Bayou and various other waterways flowing through it making it oneinently nucleated agricultural community virtually indistinguishable from most other parts of East Harrisburg Township including Buffalo Bayou area eastward into Beaumont Municipality only about 15 miles away on I - 8 highway accessed via FM 1960 just past Joe Pool’s Bridge crossing Trinity River according to one account but more likely traversed by wagon roads across open prairies watered by Trinity River before turning southeast along FM 1960 rejoining Buffalo Bayou about 7 miles distant Colfax Village being situated on high ground overlooking both rivers below swampy bottoms thick growth jungle like environment typical for Southeast Texas during prewar period several miles northeast corner Lake Whitney Preserve
