The Dickinson National Guard was organized on July 1, 1947. The unit is the oldest in Texas and has been a part of the military since World War II. The guard is made up of reservists from across the state, and its mission is to provide law enforcement and security for sporting events, conventions, fairs, and other public events. The Dickinson National Guard was first organized on November 15, 1861. The unit was designated the Eighth Texas Regiment and raised from citizen volunteers. On December 10, 1861, the regiment was brigaded with the Second Texas Regiment and the Fourth Texas Regiment in order to form the First Brigade of Cavalry of Texas Army. The brigade served as a reserve for Confederate forces during the Battle of Galveston. After the battle, the brigade was reassigned to duty with General Fitzhugh Lee’s army in Louisiana. On April 9, 1862, at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Lieutenant Colonel John S. Poindexter became colonel of the First Brigade and ordered it to march northeast to Lafayette Parish to join General Robert E. Lee’s army there. However, before reaching Lafayette Parish, Poindexter’s brigade encountered Union cavalry under Major General James Hogg at Poste Rouge Hill outside of Orleans Parish. After a series of skirmishes and self-defense against superior numbers of Union cavalrymen,Poindexter's brigade withdrew back into Lafayette Parish without engagement or casualties. On May 25th Infantryman John Bauldin killed two guards while captured during an attack on a Confederate garrison at Chalmette Plantation near New Orleans; this event is considered one of history's greatest acts of bravery by an infantryman. On July 11th Confederate Captain Lewis Fenton surrendered his ship "Queen" off Mobile Bay after outflanking Federal naval forces under Admiral Foote; this event helped solidify Confederate control over Southwest Alabama following their victory at Pensacola Beach that same day.. In October 1862 Private Augustus Catesworth shot dead three Union soldiers outside Fort Sumter in South Carolina after being inspired by scenes aboard Fort Sumtler during its bombardment campaign; this event is also recognized as one of history's most important military engagements involving an American soldier..
Dickinson, Texas is a small town located in southeastern McLennan County, within the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Arlington–Ft. Worth, TX Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Dickinson community began as a West Texas pioneer settlement in 1875 and grew rapidly due to its location on the east bank of Buffalo Bayou. Dickinson's early residents were farmers who raised cotton and corn; later they became miners and ranchers. The community developed strong political and economic ties with nearby Dallas and Fort Worth and prospered through cattle-ranching, ranching, manufacturing (particularly cheese), timber production (including sawmills) and banking. In 1930 Dickinson formed a municipal government that included a city council and two mayors; it remained an independent municipality until 1975 when it joined the larger Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. During World War II Dickinson played an important role in the war effort by providing materials for local munitions factories and shipyards; also, during the postwar boom years Dickinson experienced rapid growth as a result of its location on bayous near several major Houston pipelines. However, since 1960 Dickinson has suffered from declining prosperity as oil prices have plummeted and employment opportunities have shrunk; today its median household income is only $50,000 compared to $117,000 for Arlington County overall.
