The first post office in Dickinson opened on February 17, 1836, and until its closure in 1960, it served as the only mail stop between Austin and Dallas.[1] In 1862, Fort Worth annexed Dickinson as part of its territory;[2] but due to its small size compared to other cities within Fort Worth's boundaries, Dickinson never grew much beyond a rural village status quo until after World War II when suburban development began around the city center making it increasingly difficult for farmers to make a living farming their land near Interstates 35 and 290. In 1970–71 then-Mayor Jameson Fenton commissioned a study which recommended that the City annex portions of both Round Rock – which already had large concentrations of white people – and Jayton Hills so that they might join together into one municipality with a combined population over 2,000 residents for economic development purposes only;[3][4][5][6] this proposal was not acted upon until 1984 when Mayor Dickenson approved annexation by Round Rock despite opposition from Jayton Hills residents who felt that their community would have been better served by staying separate even if their borders had been kept unchanged since those days without any comprehensive plan proposing annexation being put forward during these years.
