Dumas is a small town in Texas, located just east of Lubbock. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Midland-Lubbock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by George Dumas in 1879 as a ranching community on the banks of the Arkansas River. By 1906, it had grown to include a post office, two churches and over 100 businesses. In 1916, Dumas became one of six towns in Culberson County to incorporate as a municipality. Dumas has experienced many changes over its history, including several waves of migration from Europe during the 19th century and early 20th century. The current population was 2,004 according to the 2010 census. Most residents are white and Hispanic; however, there are also some African Americans and Native Americans living in Dumas. Dumas is home to two museums - the George Averill Higgins Museum of Art and History (opened in 2001) and Plains Folklife Museum (opened in 2006). Additionally, there are several parks within town limits including Elm Park and Oak Park mallards ponds for swimming/fishing/boating/skiing/canoeing. The city's economy was based on agriculture, ranching, and timber production. In the 1920s, Dumas experienced an economic boom as a result of its location at the mouth of the Colorado River. However, after World War II Dumas suffered from decline due to its isolation and lack of resources. In the 1970s and 1980s Dumas saw growth as a result of tourism and new investment in education and engineering. Since 2000, however, Dumas has been experiencing significant decline as a result of several factors including environmental degradation and population growth.
The first European to explore and sight the area now known as Dumas was Pedro de Alvarado, who traveled through what is now Texas in 1541. In 1769, Spain established a presidio in San Antonio and named it for Marquis of Monterey, then governor of California. The Presidio never had any real power and was eventually abandoned in 1821. In 1836, Mexico gained independence from Spain and created its own nation, but parts of Texas continued to be part of the Mexican Empire under military rule until1848 when they were purchased by the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The area became part of the new United States after the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Dumas was first settled by non-Hispanic Americans around 1800s. A Catholic mission operated near Dumas from 1825 to 1830. The mission was destroyed by Indians in 1840 but some settlers started rebuilding it soon after. A post office called Dumasa was established at this location on October 29, 1850; it served until 1860 when a new post office called San Antonio came into being. In 1861, General Sam Houston ordered his army against Spanish forces at Palo Alto during the Texan Revolution which resulted in an successful battle that ended Spanish control over much of northern Mexico including Texas and New Mexico. However, manyTexans decided not to fight against their Spanish occupiers because they saw them as just another branch of government - something that they could challenge anytime they wanted without fear of retribution from Madrid or Washington D.C.. This attitude changed after Houston's death due to Disease which greatly impacted Texans morale and caused many people to turn their back on their countryman even though he had been instrumental in saving it from slavery & annexation by Mexico
