These brands served as identifier marks for each piece of artillery gear acquired under this mandate. Dumas, Texas is a small town in southeastern Bastrop County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Dumas is one of the oldest towns in Bastrop County and it has been established since 1849. The first settler in what would become Dumas was Nicholas Bowers who arrived in 1849 from Illinois. He named his land "Dumas" after the French author Alexandre Dumas. In 1865, Captain John Fenton took possession of some 3200 acres (1 km2) of Bastrop County land east of present day Dumars and applied for a post office to be called Fentonville on July 1, 1865. The name stuck and was used until 1920 when it was changed to Dumars due to objections from residents that "Dumas" sounded too French sounding and they preferred "Bastrop". In 1887 another group of settlers arrived from Louisiana led by Jno Hargrave with the intention of founding a county seat for Bastrop County but no action was taken until 1893 when James Aiken submitted a petition to Congress asking for an act authorizing him to establish a new county seat within Bastrop County if he could find suitable land. On December 6th 1893 Congressman Charles Goodyear presented this petition to President Grover Cleveland who signed it into law on January 3rd 1894 making Dumars the new county seat. The first courthouse in what would become Dumars was built in 1907 by Jno Hargrave with funds provided by Governor Jesse Helms which served as the interim courthouse until 1913 when the present building was completed by Dolph Lundgren funded with state money through the Texas Reconstruction Act which gave black Texans their own government not just under white rule like before). The current courthouse also serves as district court building as well as being home to various other government agencies including probation services and adult probation detentions department which are located adjacent on Elm Street across from First Baptist Church where many local businesses were founded such as Lubbock Chevrolet dealership (now Goodyear Tire & Rubber), Butcher Shoppe (now Bob Evans) and several others during its early years including Waco Hotel (later known as Embassy Suites), now Longhorn Steakhouse & Saloon and then closed down after Hurricane Harvey struck later that year; all these businesses still stand today except Lubbock Chevrolet which became an auto parts store before being remodeled into an interesting restaurant called Nacho's Riviera which opened up next door in 2018!
