Dumas, Texas is a small town in central Texas, located about 30 miles east of Austin. The population was 7,391 at the 2000 census. Dumas is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. The name "Dumas" comes from Mexican explorer Antonio Armando de la Torre's 1827 journey through this region which passed through the present day town on his way to explore the Trinity River valley. La Torre discovered and named the Trinity River after General José de San Miguel, who had invaded Mexico in 1824 and driven out Spanish settlers in what is now Texansouthern Texas. In 1892, two brothers named John Wirt and William Fenton bought 120 acres southeast of Dumas from David A. Browning for $1 per acre In 1903, they moved the community to its current location on FM 2100 south of I-10 where it remains today. In 1911, their youngest brother Charles Wirt donated land to build an agricultural college in Dumas which became Baylor University in 1919 In 1927–28 and again in 1935–36, contributions by each family led to construction of a new high school (now known as Lone Star College) on Main Street east of FM 2100 near what is now Dyess Army Airfield . Homebuilders Sam Rayburn and Clyde Anson began building homes around this time including some that remain standing today such as those at 512 Elm St., just northwest of downtown Dumas .
